Presentation

PermaFungi is a Brussels-based cooperative with a social purpose committed from its inception to a circular economy in “association” with mushrooms.

Founded in 2013, the company initially focused on the production of mushrooms for consumption from recycled urban coffee grounds.

Leveraging its expertise in the field, it expanded its activities to develop a diverse range of products and bio-sourced materials from the natural growth of mushrooms, thus following a circular production approach.

Products and Services

PermaFungi produces organic oyster mushrooms for consumption, grown on local coffee grounds. In the same vein, they sell oyster mushroom growing kits for consumers. Additionally, the company turns the coffee grounds transformed by oyster mushrooms into a natural soil called “champost,” used for growing other vegetables at Nos Pilifs farm.

Under the European PermaLIFE programme, PermaFungi develops and produces innovative myco-materials on a large scale from coffee grounds, spent grains and sawdust. These natural, circular materials have unique properties that allow them to replace plastic materials and mineral wools in a range of fields such as design, packaging, and construction.

The myco-materials are entirely natural. Their strength, impermeability and fire resistance make them interesting alternatives for creating quality products while being compostable

LumiFungi, the first mushroom-based product marketed in Belgium, is a completely handmade, organic, and biodegradable lampshade.

Expertise

With extensive expertise in mushroom cultivation, PermaFungi continues to explore innovative applications for fully exploiting this material. Its thorough understanding of the life cycle and growth of mushrooms enables it to assist other stakeholders in the industry in this endeavour.
